First Session: 12/12/14

Here is the first two-hour session.  It has been a while since I have touched this dialogue, and so I bring an excerpt of some previous work.  This section is taken from Plato's Ion, 530a.

SW. To\n  1Iwna xai/rein.  po/qen ta\ nu=n h9mi=n e0pidedh/mhkav; h2 oi1koqen e0c  0Efe/sou;

e0pidedh/mhkav – 2^nd singular perfect active indicative of e0pidhme/w: to be at home, live at home

NB: Note the suffix –qen affixed to po/qen and oi1koqen.

Socrates: Greetings Ion!  From where now have you come to live among us?  Or from your home out of Ephesus?

Ou0damw=v – Adverbial form of ou0da/mov: in no wise

Ion: In no wise, oh Socrates, but from Epidaurus, from the Asclepion.

SW. Mw=n kai\ r9ayw|dw=n a0gw=na tiqe/asin tw=| qew=| oi9  0Epidau/rioi;

Mw=n – Adverbial contraction for mh\ ou]n from which negative answers are then expected in the discourse.

Socrates: The Epidaurians then do not then establish contests of rhapsodes on behalf of the gods?
